Are Tyres recyclable?

  • Steve Lings
  • Are Tyres recyclable?

Tyres are recyclable- and not just into other tyres. Recycling specialist retailers and online stores have a huge selection of really useful items all made from recycled tyres, ranging from pens, notebooks and mouse mats to window boxes and planters, belts and sandals. You can even get your shoes or boots resoled with recycle tyre.

On a more specialist level, recycled tyre is also used in insulation blocks and roof tiles for building, for drainage aggregates, gaskets, seals and washers. If you"ve got a spare tyre, you can also recycle it yourself in a number of creative ways. For example:

Bumper: If you live near a boatyard or marina, ask if anyone there would like to use it as a bumper.

Swing: If you"ve got a big enough tree, make a tyre swing for the kids.

Flowerbed: Stack them on top of each other, fill them with soil and use them to grow potatoes. to harvest, pull the stack apart tyre by tyre and gather the spuds!
