What’s Biofuel?

  • Steve Lings
  • What’s Biofuel?

Biofuels are fuels derived from organic matter, either animal or vegetable.

It"s not a new idea as we are led to believe either! Henry Ford"s famous Model T, produced in 1908, was designed to run on ethanol, and Rudolph Diesel"s demonstration engine in 1912 ran on peanut oil, but, as cheap petroleum-based fuels took over, biofuels went onto the back burner.

Today these fuels are seen as the replacement car fuel of the future as oil supplies dwindle, one of the benefits of biofuels are there are a renewable source, and the plants grown to make biofuels absorb the same amount of CO2 as is released when the fuel is burned, making for significantly lower emissions than fossil fuels.
