About Air and Climate

With increased concern in society about Climate change, it is often worth considering the other aspects of how the air and climate which surrounds us affects our environment.

Air in our atmosphere usually consists of (approximately)

78% Nitrogen

20% Oxygen

1% Argon

0.5% Water Vapour

0.04% Carbon Dioxide

And very small concentrations of other gases

In different places these concentrations can vary widely. For example, at busy junctions in city centres the concentrations of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide can be much higher.

As well as gases there can be trace amounts of solid particles in the air.

These are usually harmless, but in high quantities they an be linked to lung diseases and other illnesses.

Changes in the particulate levels and in the concentrations of gases in the air are believed to have an influence on the climate, and high quantities of sulphur and nitrogen oxides in the air, for example, have been determined to cause acid rain which can damage plants and destroy crops.
